Influencer des Jahres 2025: Jesus Christus

Eine “Religion des Todes” und der Zerstörung, so nannte es der Hoffnungsttheologe Jürgen Moltmann 2019, breitet sich in der Welt aus. Phänomene wie Brexit, Trump, Putin, Nordkorea oder auch AfD und BSW repräsentieren ein Gemisch aus Personenkult, Zersplitterung, Respektlosigkeit und Aggressivität. Hinzu kommt die immer weiter fortschreitende Zerstörung der Schöpfung: Auch 2024 haben wir nichts gewonnen, mit allergrößter Wahrscheinlichkeit wurde es schon wieder ein neuer Rekord im Ausstoß von Treibhausgasen, ein weiterer Anstieg in einer viel zu langen Kurve nach oben. Nicht zuletzt tragen die kriegerischen Zerstörungen, der Einsatz von Panzern und Flugwaffen, die Explosionen, die nötigen Rettungsmaßnahmen und der Wiederaufbau, aber auch jedes Militärmanöver, jede NATO-Übung massiv dazu bei. Täglich sterben mehrere Tierarten für immer aus.

Die jungen Generationen wissen das.

Die Älteren, also meine Generation und darüber, können ihnen keine Hoffnung geben, denn wir Boomer sind unglaubwürdig gefangen im schlechten Vorbild unseres konsumberauschten Lebensstils.

Die jungen Leute merken das.

Unsere Rechtfertigungen klingen für sie (wie für manchen von uns übrigens auch) ebenso unangemessen wie das arrogante Geschwafel der FD(-day)P.

Auch als Christen haben wir versagt. Die derzeit am stärksten wachsende Bewegung in der weltweiten Christenheit innerhalb sämtlicher Kirchen und Denominationen ist das synkretistische Wohlstandsevangelium. Synkretismus ist die Vermischung von Religionen und war schon immer ein Problem. Heute vermischen wir Jesus mit dem Gott des Konsums. Wir verwechseln Reichtum mit Segen und Askese mit Fluch. Aus den Seligpreisungen wird dann “Gesegnet die Pastoren, die im Bentley gefahren werden“.

Es ist uns Christen nicht gelungen, eine im Westen glaubwürdige Kultur des Lebens zu etablieren, die stärker ist als der Terror des Todes. Im Gegenteil, viele evangelikale Christen betreiben einen Personenkult, als hätte Gott weltliche Kaiser nötig, um sein Reich zu bauen. In den USA ist man heute schon bereit, dafür gewalttätig zu werden. In Europa wird es auch kommen. Im Westen werden Kirchen und Gemeinden weiter schrumpfen, sagen die Prognosen. Es gelang uns, viele Äste der Glaubwürdigkeit, auf denen wir saßen, erfolgreich abzusägen. Bald wird der ganze Baum wie tot dastehen.

Junge Leute merken auch das.

Wir sind extrem schlechte Vorbilder. Obwohl Jesus sagt, er mache alles neu, sind wir von Neophobie geplagte Seelen, wir wollen nix Neues, wir wollen zurück zum Alten, zu dem, was wir kannten, als wir noch jung, die Welt noch in Ordnung und wir Halbgötter waren, als alles noch ging, und zwar im satten Überfluss.

Doch genau deshalb hören immer weniger der jungen Generation auf uns Alte, und immer mehr auf ihre Gleichaltrigen. Und dort scheint etwas zu passieren, jedenfalls hier in Schweden. Ich höre Berichte von Jugendpastoren, die sich kaum retten können vor Zulauf in ihrer Jugendarbeit. Von zahllosen Bekehrungen unter jungen Leuten mit völlig säkularem Hintergrund. Die dann schnell selbst zu Evangelisten werden, und ihre Kumpels überzeugen, dass sie dringend diesen Jesus brauchen, obwohl sie selber nie in einer Bibel gelesen haben. Doch Jesus haben sie getroffen, wie die allerersten Christen zu der Zeit, als es noch gar kein Neues Testament gab. Ich hatte gedacht, das seien vielleicht ein paar Ausnahmen gewesen, von denen ich gehört hatte. Doch nun bestätigt ausgerechnet das schwedische Fernsehen einen landesweiten Trend: Jesus kann der größte Influencer des Jahres 2025 werden.

Ob es dem Heiligen Geist da wohl auch gelingen kann, unsere verkalkten Gehirnzellen und verknöcherten Herzen so weich und flexibel zu massieren, dass auch wir unsere Neophobie loswerden? Dass wir dem Terror des Todes eine leuchtende Kultur des Lebens entgegensetzen und endlich auch selbst als Vorbilder dienen können – in Wort und Tat?

Influencer of 2025: Jesus Christ

A “religion of death” and destruction, as the hope theologian Jürgen Moltmann called it in 2019, is spreading throughout the world. Phenomena such as Brexit, Trump, Putin, North Korea or all of the right- or left-wing-populism represent a mixture of personality cult, fragmentation, disrespect and aggression. Added to this is the ever-increasing destruction of creation: in 2024 we have gained nothing. In all likelihood, there will be a new record in greenhouse gas emissions, a further rise in a curve that has been rising for far too long. Last but not least, the destruction caused by war, the use of tanks and fighter jets, the explosions, the necessary rescue operations and reconstruction, but also every military manoeuvre and NATO exercise, contribute massively to this. Every day, several species of animals are wiped out forever.

The younger generations are aware of this.

The older ones, that is, my generation and older, cannot give them any hope, because we boomers are caught in the bad example of our consumerist lifestyle.

The young are noticing.

Our justifications sound just as misplaced to them (as they do to some of us, for that matter) as the arrogant ramblings of the FD(-day)P.*

We have also failed as Christians. The currently fastest growing movement in world Christianity, across all churches and denominations, is the syncretic prosperity gospel. Syncretism is the mixing of religions and has always been a problem. Today we mix Jesus with the god of consumerism. We confuse wealth with blessing and asceticism with curse. The Beatitudes then become “Blessed are the pastors who are driven around in Bentleys”.

We Christians have failed to establish a credible culture of life in the West that is stronger than the terror of death. On the contrary, many evangelical Christians practise an idolisation of powerful individuals, as if God needed secular emperors to build his kingdom. In the United States, people are already prepared to resort to violence to achieve this. It will happen in Europe too. Churches and congregations in the West are predicted to continue to shrink. We have succeeded in sawing off many of the branches of credibility on which we were sitting. Soon the whole tree will look dead.

Young people notice even this.

We are very poor role models. Although Jesus says he makes all things new, we are souls plagued by neophobia; we don’t want anything new, we want to go back to the old days when the world was in order and we were demigods, when everything was possible and there was plenty to go around.

That’s why less and less of the younger generation listens to us older people and more and more to their peers. And something seems to be happening, at least here in Sweden. I hear reports from youth pastors who can hardly keep up with the influx of young people in their youth work. Of conversions among young people from completely secular backgrounds. And then they quickly become evangelists themselves, convincing their friends that they urgently need this Jesus, even though they have hardly read a Bible themselves. But they have met Jesus, like the very first Christians at a time when there was no New Testament. I had thought that perhaps these were a few exceptions I had heard about. But now Swedish television, of all places, is confirming a nationwide trend: Jesus can be the biggest influencer of 2025.

Will the Holy Spirit be able to massage our calcified brain cells and ossified hearts to get rid of our neophobia? Will we be able to counter the terror of death with a radiant culture of life and finally set an example in word and deed?
